“ Tribute to Virgil Abloh ”
Made in Houdini, Cinema 4D, and Redshift.
Virgil Abloh, as he is to many, is an immense inspiration on my life and creative practice. To this end I wanted to show my appreciation by making a tribute film to, in my opinion, his best work, the redesigned Air Jordan One for his brand Off-White.
Some stills that haven’t been mangled by Vimeo’s compression…
Growth solver built in Houdini to form the exterior of the shoe.
Vellum simulation for the Off-White logo softbodies that fill the interior. This shows the marriage of brands between Nike and Off-White and the very symbiotic nature of that partnership.
Rope’s built in Houdini’s Vellum solver. The strands are meant to highlight the deconstructed nature that Virgil always seemed to have in his work with Nike.
Using the “Thin Film” component of Redshift’s new Standard shader allowed me to achieve a beautiful iridescence to each strand.
Using noise and some VEX code I was able to achieve this cylindrical, voxel-like, flow fields that look a bit like water, and a bit like grasslands.
Final show shot. There is so much inspiration for this shot from anime, something that inspires me and Virgil alike.
